The Grandiflora type is defined by bigger-sized blooms, the Multiflora has a peculiar double layer of petals, also known as flower within a flower, the Supertunias bear smaller-sized flowers but in greater abundance, and the cascade or wave series are great for baskets, for their cascading/trailing manner of growth. In India, says Pawar, the most easily available and sturdy cultivars are Petunia grandiflora, Petunia multiflora, Supertunias and the Cascade series. Petunia types and how to grow them From several shades of pink, white, purple and red, to striped, colour sprayed, or almost black-deep purple, the petunias have been hybridised enough to provide stunning variety. Since their roots don’t go too deep, a mid-sized pot is apt to grow this floral splendour. One can mix and match different colours and size-types of petunia in the hanging basket arrangement. Baskets are suspended in the air, which allows maximum ventilation opportunity to a plant which cannot stand humidity,” says Sahu. ![]() “This has many advantages, the first being the aesthetic appeal. According to Rima Sahu, a city-based architect, the best way to grow petunias on a terrace or balcony garden is in hanging baskets. The plant doesn’t have a very deep or vigorous root system, therefore, ants like to feast on its tender roots,” warns Pawar, who is also a guest lecturer in botany science at Fergusson College and SPPU. “If growing in the ground, I recommend checking the soil for ants before planting the saplings, because petunias are prone to ant attacks. They can be mixed with other short-heighted plants like dianthus, salvia and dwarf marigold for colour and textural play. If one has a ground garden, petunias work best as the front runners in the flower beds owing to their short size growing them behind a taller plant will cast a literal shadow on their blossoms. As an added bonus, petunias are among the most inexpensive seasonal flowering plants one would find in nurseries, with a decent-sized sapling priced between Rs 20 and Rs 40. He underlines that the plant is a great attraction in gardens primarily due to the abundance of flowers it yields, without much effort. Petunias grow best at temperatures between 10 and 35 degrees, anything below or above it can’t withstand,” says Bintu K Pawar, a botanist and horticulture entrepreneur. “It likes a cool climate, but not severe cold.
