![]() ![]() From Adele’s “Hello” to ZZ Top’s “Gimme All Your Lovin'” - these are the videos that continue to thrill us, delight us, disturb us, and remind us just how much you can do in three to four minutes with a song, a camera, a concept, a pose, some mood lighting, and an iconic hand gesture or two. But all of these picks are perfect examples of how pairing sound and vision created an entire artistic vocabulary, gave us a handful of miniature-movie masterpieces, and changed how we heard (and saw) music. No, “Thriller” is not.) A few pre-date the channel several have never played on MTV at all. You’ll notice some significant changes from the last time we did this. In honor of MTV’s 40th anniversary, we’ve decided to rank the top 100 music videos of all time. Four decades after the channel’s launch and long after it stopped playing them, music videos still complement songs, create mythologies, and cause chatter and controversy. The internet soon stepped in to fill the void. The format proved so durable that when MTV decided to switch things up and devote its air time to game shows, reality TV, and scripted series, thus shutting down the primary pipeline for these promos, artists still kept making them. Entire genres and subgenres - from hip-hop to grunge to boy-band pop to nu metal - became part of the mainstream. The network revolutionized the music industry, inspired a multitude of copycat programming, made many careers, and broke more than a few. Virtually everyone knew what a music video was, and they wanted their MTV. At this point, viewers might have a few questions, like: Is this like a radio station on TV? What is a “VJ”? And what the hell is a “music video”?Ī year later, no one was asking that last question. This wasn’t a news channel it was “Music Television.” If they kept tuning in, they’d see clips and hear VJs talk about bringing you the latest in music videos. ![]() And then they’d hear a voiceover, with all the smooth patter of an FM disc jockey: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock & roll.” Cue power chords, and a flag with a network logo - something called MTV - that rapidly changed colors and patterns. The familiar sight of Neil Armstrong exiting his lunar module and walking on the moon would fill the TV screen. In the wee hours of August 1st, 1981, someone flipping through their channels might have come across the image of a rocket blasting into space. ![]() ![]() ![]() “The audience that Netflix thought was going to come and watch it was very different from the audience that has shown up,” Paul Martin, the executive producer of “Drive to Survive,” said at the Season Five premiere last week. ![]() The shift in fan base even surprised Netflix. But what is particularly exciting for us is how non-fans have become fans.” “Your avid fan will 100 percent hoover through the series. “This has resonated with a different demographic, a younger demographic, a female demographic,” Ian Holmes, F1’s director of media rights, said in an interview last year. Last year, a global survey by Motorsport Network found the average age of F1 fans - not just “Drive to Survive” viewers - had fallen from 36 to 32 since 2017. That approach broke F1 away from its traditional older, male audience. It was an opportunity to engage with fans who had no prior knowledge of motor racing, by focusing on the characters. But they soon realized this wasn’t going to be a show about front wings, telemetry analysis and tire degradation. F1 preferred a series that covered the whole grid, not the “All or Nothing” approach of focusing on a single team (in that case, the Premier League’s Arsenal) over the course of a season.į1’s an innately secretive sport, and teams were hesitant at first about taking part - Ferrari and Mercedes sat out Season One. A show for all-comersįollowing the success of sports docuseries like “All or Nothing” and “Last Chance” in the past decade, Liberty Media - which acquired F1’s commercial rights in 2017 - quickly saw an opportunity to give motorsports the same treatment.Īccessibility was always the priority. In December 2018, Netflix won a bidding war against Universal, Warner Bros, Paramount, Amazon, and Fox for the film rights to The Watcher, according to Deadline-and Netflix also owns the story as part of the bid package. At its heart remains the formula that not only made the show a global success but helped remake F1 in and for the United States by opening the high-speed drama, personalities and politics to everyone with a Netflix account. ![]() The story was first brought to light by The Cut in a November 2018 article. After their lawsuit was thrown out and neighbors denied their request to tear down the structure, the homeowners sold the house in August of 2019-but for $500,000 less than they originally paid for it. As for how the rest of the real story turned out, there was an “ exhaustive investigation” by the local police and the private investigators hired by the family, but no one was ever identified. One letter read: “I am pleased to know your names now, and the name of the young blood you have brought to me."īased on the trailer, it looks like the family will already be living in the home as they are stalked and terrorized throughout the series. Most unsettling of all was the focus on the couple’s young children. One year after purchasing it, they sued the previous owners and claimed that they knew about “The Watcher” but didn’t address the situation. The Broadduses were so spooked that they never actually moved into the house. In reality, Derek and Maria Broaddus bought their dream home for nearly $1.4 million, but their excitement quickly turned to terror when they started receiving threatening letters from “The Watcher.” The anonymous harasser claimed that the six-bedroom home in Westfield, New Jersey had belonged to his family for decades, and although he didn’t live in it anymore, he had been put in charge to watch over it, “ waiting for its second coming.” Like many productions based on a true story, the series-starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale-departs a bit from what actually happened. Based on the true story of a stalker who terrorized a family via mail to prevent them from moving into their New Jersey dream home, the series hits the streaming platform on October 13-and we even dedicated two episodes of our haunted house podcast, Dark House, to analyzing the bizarre tale. It's official: Netflix has dropped the trailer for its limited series The Watcher. ![]() ![]() ![]() The bipartisan EXCEL Act will strengthen our knowledge of the People’s Republic of China and empower the United States government to recruit, hire, and retain the next generation of American experts on China. “If we are to outcompete China and win the geostrategic competition of the 21st century, we need a much better understanding of the country’s language, history, and institutions, as well as the objectives they seek to advance in the Indo-Pacific region. “The government of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party are the most significant geostrategic challenges facing the United States and our allies and partners in the 21st century,” said Congressman Bera. ![]() to preserve freedom in the face of a new Communist threat to the world,” said Congressman Barr.
